SANS Technology
Institute, announced last Friday that he found malicious software on Hikvision
digital video recorders (DVRs), which are used to record video from
surveillance cameras. The virus seems to spread from device to device onto each
machine it connects with on the network in question. Along with replicating,
though, it also uses the closed-circuit television operators to mine for
bitcoin, sending those profits back to the virus’ creator.
What is Bitcoin?
Bitcoin is a software-based online payment system described
by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2008 and introduced as open-source software in
2009.Payments are recorded in a public ledger using its own unit of account,
which is also called bitcoin. Payments work peer-to-peer without
a central repository or single administrator, which has led the US Treasury to call bitcoin a decentralized virtual currency.
“The bitcoin system is run by independent machines spread
across the globe, and if you contribute processing power to the system, you
receive some bitcoin in return. This is called mining, and hackers often seek
to mine using any machines they can gain control of – including security camera
DVRs.”
In
US & UK Bitcoin is used with Cryptolocker ransomware and hacker can Encrypt
your data and ask to pay him in bitcoins if you don’t the Encryption key will
be deleted forever. i.e you
cannot recover your data at any cost once the key is deleted.
Cryptolocker
Ransomware till now only supports Windows and Linux
